What are SF symbols?

  • SF Symbols is a framework developed by Apple that provides a set of icons and symbols for developers to use in their iOS, macOS, watchOS, and tvOS applications.
  • Over 5,000 SF symbols available to use, at time of writing. Apple is constantly updating this.
  • The symbols in SF Symbols are scalable vector graphics, allowing developers to resize them while maintaining crispness and clarity.
  • Vast library designed to be consistent with Apple’s user interface guidelines, offering a wide variety of shapes, objects, and actions.
  • Designed with dynamic type support to adapt to the user’s preferred font size, ensuring accessibility.
  • Easily customisable with various SwiftUI modifiers (as seen later in the article).
  • Available for free and can be used in both commercial and personal projects with attribution to Apple
  • Regular updates — Apple periodically updates the SF Symbols catalog, adding new icons and improving existing ones

SF symbols are remarkably easy to use and integrate into your project.
